Code Platoon, in partnership with tech talent from across the country, presents Hacktober 2020: Tech Helping Vets. Beginning Friday October 16, teams of developers, programmers, and project managers will converge virtually working on a technological solution for Veteran serving organizations. The weekend will also include coding workshops. Demo Day will take place Sunday Oct 18 with our judging panel choosing the winning project. This event will provide opportunities for the tech community to utilize their talents for the benefit of the Veterans.

What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is a design sprint-like event; often, in which computer programmers and others involved in software development collaborate intensively on software projects throughout extended hours of the day for a condensed period of time.

What is the goal of Code Platoon Hacktober 2020?
Code Platoon Hacktober 2020 aims to create a conceptual solution for a Veteran Serving Organization in one weekend. The goal is to create a strong starting point for a solution that can be further developed in the future to benefit the Veteran community.
Does this event cost money?
There is no entry fee for this event. There will be an option for a donation amount of your choice during registration for Demo Day and workshops.
How can I participate in Code Platoon Hacktober 2020?
You can view the Demo Day’s final presentations on Sunday October 18 at 3pm. If you are interested in coding, you can attend one of our workshops during the weekend. If you are a programmer, you can join a team. If you want your company involved you can sponsor.

Will there be prizes for the winning team?
Yes, Code Platoon swag will be distributed to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

Can I create my own teams?
Yes, in the Google form you are able to register multiple individuals on your team.
How many individuals are on a team?
There is a 10 member limit for each team.
After the event who has ownership of the project and IP?
Intellectual Property will remain in the ownership of the selected Veteran Organization. Please read the terms and conditions for more information.
What do I need to bring/have in order to be on a team?
You must supply your own laptop, monitors, and other hardware necessary to produce a solution. Since this is a virtual event, you must ensure a reliable internet connection as well.
What criteria will be the judging criteria for solutions?
A panel of judges will deliberate based on the following criteria: Creative, Innovative, Useful, Technical Difficulty, presentation, and “Wow” Factor.
What are the technical roles for a team?
Teams will consists of the following roles:
- UX/UI Designer: Designing graphic user interface elements, like menus, tabs and widgets
- Project Manager: Designing the project goals and success markers, determine how success will be measured and tracked
- Domain Expert: Someone with the right base of knowledge — even if that person doesn’t necessarily have a strong technical background.
- Backend Developers: handling the nuts and bolts: server-side functions like data and content management, API integrations, and security — in short, everything you don’t see but that makes your product work.
- Frontend Developers: mediating between the simple, intuitive design provided by the UX designer and the often complex programs created by the backend developer.
What is a coding workshop?
Throughout the weekend Code Platoon will host coding workshops across all different experience levels. Via zoom a tech expert will work with a small group of attendees on a specific aspect of coding. This is an interactive experience and great opportunity to learn new skills and build your tech network. Official schedule of workshops coming soon.
