VR&E Overview
The VR&E program can empower your journey to a rewarding career in the tech industry. Administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), VR&E provides essential support to Veterans and transitioning Servicemembers with service-connected disabilities, helping them enter meaningful civilian careers.
This program, previously named Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Voc Rehab), is structured into five distinct tracks:
- Reemployment: Facilitates Veterans’ return to pre-deployment jobs, including adjustments or accommodations for any service-related disabilities.
- Rapid Access to Employment: Aids Veterans in leveraging their existing skills for new employment, providing job search tools, resume writing, and interview preparation.
- Self-Employment: Supports Veterans with entrepreneurial aspirations, offering business plan development, small business training, and resources for successful business establishment.
- Employment Through Long-Term Services: Assists Veterans facing difficulties in their current roles due to service-connected disabilities, helping them transition to fields that align better with their abilities and interests.
- Independent Living: Designed for Veterans who are limited in daily activities or not immediately able to return to work, offering counseling, resource referrals, and accessibility evaluations.
VR&E for Tech Training
Unlike the GI Bill®, VR&E is not designed to fund your education—it’s a comprehensive tool to help you become employed in a suitable career path. If you’re interested in using VR&E to start a tech career, it’s essential to start your application early, as the process can take up to several months.
To qualify for VR&E benefits, you must meet the following conditions:
- You are a Veteran or active duty Servicemember.
- You have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% (Veteran) or a pre-discharge disability rating of at least 20% (Servicemember).
- You received or are going to receive an honorable discharge from service.
Once you’ve determined you qualify to use VR&E, you may be able to use VR&E with Code Platoon. Here’s your path to Code Platoon with VR&E:
